Have you ever felt that your ear is blocked, full, or keeps making popping sounds? Maybe voices sound muffled even though your hearing test is normal. These problems are often caused by changes in the middle ear, the small space behind your eardrum. Tympanometry is a quick and painless test that helps your audiologist find out if your middle ear is working properly.
What is
Tympanometry?
Tympanometry
is a simple test that checks how well your eardrum moves. A healthy eardrum
moves freely when air pressure changes. If there is fluid behind the eardrum,
pressure in the ear, a hole in the eardrum, or stiffness due to previous
infections, the movement changes. The test records these movements and helps
identify the cause of your ear problem.
The test
usually takes less than a minute for each ear. It is performed by a qualified
audiologist using a small, soft probe placed gently at the entrance of the ear
canal. No injections, medicines, or special preparation are required, and the
test is completely painless. You may only feel a slight pressure change,
similar to what you experience while travelling in an airplane.
Why is
this Test Done?
Tympanometry
is done to check whether the middle ear is healthy. It helps detect fluid
behind the eardrum, pressure changes in the middle ear, Eustachian tube
blockage, eardrum perforation, or reduced movement of the eardrum due to
scarring. It is also useful for people who have frequent ear infections,
blocked ears, ear pain, popping sounds, or temporary hearing loss. Before
fitting hearing aids, this test helps ensure that the middle ear is functioning
normally.
How is the
Test Performed?
You will be
asked to sit comfortably while the audiologist gently places a soft probe into
your ear canal. The machine briefly changes the air pressure and measures how
your eardrum responds. You do not have to speak, press any buttons, or respond
to sounds. The entire process takes only a few seconds for each ear and is then
repeated on the other ear.
What Do
the Results Mean?
The test
produces a graph called a tympanogram, which shows how well your eardrum
is moving. A normal result means your middle ear pressure and eardrum movement
are healthy. If the graph shows little or no movement, it may indicate fluid
behind the eardrum. If the graph shows negative pressure, it may suggest a
blocked Eustachian tube. In some cases, the results may indicate a hole in the
eardrum or other middle ear problems.
Interpretation
A normal
tympanogram suggests that the middle ear is functioning normally. An abnormal
tympanogram may indicate middle ear fluid, Eustachian tube dysfunction, eardrum
perforation, or stiffness of the eardrum. Your audiologist will interpret the
findings along with your hearing test results and symptoms to decide whether
medical treatment, an ENT consultation, or further hearing tests are needed.
Why is
Tympanometry Important?
Although the
test takes only a minute, it provides valuable information about the health of
your middle ear. It helps explain symptoms such as blocked ears, repeated ear
infections, ear pressure, and hearing changes. At Acoustik Hearing and
Speech Clinic, tympanometry is performed using calibrated equipment to
ensure accurate results and help you receive the right treatment for your
hearing concerns.
