What is the MCL & UCL Test?

The Most Comfortable Level (MCL) is the volume at which speech sounds clear, natural, and easy to listen to.

The Uncomfortable Level (UCL) is the point where sounds become too loud or unpleasant. Knowing these two levels helps your audiologist adjust your hearing aid so that sounds are neither too soft nor painfully loud.

Duration: About 10–15 minutes

Why is this Test Done?

This test helps your audiologist:

Find the volume that feels most comfortable for you.
Identify the loudest sound you can hear comfortably.

How is the Test Performed?

The test is simple and takes only a few minutes.

You will sit comfortably in a quiet soundproof room and wear headphones.
The audiologist will play speech or tones at a soft volume.
The sound will gradually become louder.
You will be asked to say:

"This is comfortable to listen to." (Your MCL)
"This is becoming too loud." (Your UCL)

The same test is repeated for both ears.

What Do the Results Mean?

Your results show:

The best listening volume for clear and comfortable hearing.
The loudest sound you can tolerate comfortably.
Whether you have a reduced tolerance for loud sounds.
The ideal settings for your hearing aid.

How are the Results Interpreted?

Normal Results

You can hear speech comfortably.
Loud sounds remain comfortable until higher volumes.
Your hearing aid can be programmed easily for everyday listening.

If the Results are Different

Sounds may become uncomfortable very quickly.
You may have increased sensitivity to loud sounds.
The results help your audiologist choose the safest and most comfortable hearing aid settings.
