Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) Test: A Simple Way to Check Inner Ear Health - By Acoustik Hearing

What Do the Results Mean?

If the test shows that the echoes are present, it usually means the tiny hair cells inside the inner ear are working normally.

If the echoes are reduced or absent, it may suggest a hearing problem, blockage in the ear canal, middle ear fluid, or damage to the inner ear. In such cases, your audiologist may recommend additional hearing tests to find the exact cause.

Interpretation

A normal OAE result indicates that the outer hair cells of the inner ear are functioning normally, suggesting healthy cochlear function.

An abnormal OAE result indicates absent or reduced otoacoustic emissions, which may be due to earwax blockage, middle ear problems, inner ear damage, or hearing loss. The results should always be interpreted along with other hearing tests for an accurate diagnosis.
